I am a pilot but haven't flown in about 5 years and have decided to start flying again. Last night the weather was very marginal so I thought I would listen to how ATC handled the traffic coming into San Antonio. I listened on Live ATC and watched the traffic on Foreflight and was so impressed with how the 2 controllers handled approach control. The winds were light but there was heavy precipitation and thunderstorms near the airport. This led to 2 options to land for the pilots, runway 04 and runway 31L. The ILS was inoperative at 04 so the GPS (RNAV) approach was used. 31L had DME and the PAPI inoperative. The controllers gave the pilots their choice of runways and accommodated every request. The pilots and controllers were communicating and working together so quickly and efficiently to keep everyone safe and get on the ground in a timely fashion. Every pilot request for a change or deviation in heading or altitude was granted except one where the controller said something to the effect of "I can't legally give you that turn but let me have you...." At one point, the controller changed and the handoff was seamless. The new controller stepped right in and continued to manage the aircraft in the air keeping the pilots safe and away from the bad weather. The professionalism I heard from both the pilots and controllers last night was admirable and inspiring. Thank you for keeping us safe.
