Hertz Rent2Buy: Unsafe vehicles, zero accountability, and shocking standards for a national brand My experience with Hertz’s Rent2Buy program revealed systemic issues — it’s clear that Hertz has a serious quality control and customer accountability problem. I traveled 6+ hours to the Hertz Smithtown location to purchase a vehicle that Hertz assured me was in great condition. What I found instead was a car that was unsafe to drive: (1) A tire had a large, visible sidewall bulge, creating a dangerous blowout risk (2) The car had a dashboard inspection warning light (3) I discovered that the windshield wipers didn’t work properly and had to replace them myself just to safely drive in the rain (4) When I asked for the dangerous tire to be replaced, I was told Hertz would only replace one tire, even though every mechanic will tell you tires should be replaced in pairs at minimum. (5) Worse, the replacement tire they used didn’t even match the other tires, a safety and performance concern All of this came after I was told in writing the vehicle was in “excellent condition.” No meaningful inspection was done, and clearly, there are no real safety standards or accountability mechanisms in place to prevent customers from being handed vehicles that are unfit for the road. This wasn’t just inconvenient — it was reckless. I lost time, money, and confidence in a process that clearly prioritizes volume over safety or customer care. Hertz made me chase down fixes for problems that never should have made it past the lot, all while offering no apology or real support.

I rented a car at DFW. I wish I could give them zero stars!!! One hour and 20 minutes of waiting. I booked two months in advance. At the counter, they didn’t accept my reservation via Booking.com because it didn’t include the taxes.(I booked it when I was in Europe using my account on the Booking.com app) the receipt showed “taxes will be included in the full price” which was a total of $93.00. They asked me for an international drivers license which it didn’t make sense. They didn’t wanna hear any reason and they were very narrow minded. After waiting so long helping the customers should be a priority. They were way overbooked. The only car available was $180 a day, smaller than the intermediate I booked ahead of time. Because I had an important event to attend I couldn’t do otherwise I end up spending $500.00+ which is absolutely criminal!! 5 times more than what I booked. I will never use HERTZ again for the rest of my life. Absolutely awful!

I rented a vehicle in Portland OR for 4 days. Original quote was $789. I was offered an upgrade but never told of the increased amount. I placed full coverage on the vehicle as well. I expected to pay around $1200 according to their updated quote. When I left OR I still had the key fob in my pocket. I called immediately and was told that if I overnight it back, I wouldn’t be charged. WELL THAT WAS A LIE. Not only did they still charge me for the key they got back, but added 4 more days and with full ins. Then billed my card $2345. I have attempted multiple contacts and no response accept from a review on google. THIS COMPANY IS CRIMINAL AND DOES NIT CARE ONE BIT ABOUT CUSTOMERS. RENTER BEWARE.

Just picked up my rental from my local Hertz. Upon arrival at home, I realized how dirty and disgusting the interior of the vehicle was. I cleaned and disinfected it for over an hour. Why....because I need to get my family to Arizona for a family wedding. I've been trying now for 45 minutes to speak to someone other than the salesman who said to just bring it in, and they would swap it out. Do better, Hertz!!! As you can see from my pictures, I'm not lying. And if this is how you treat gold members....how does a regular Joe get treated!?!?! ***And wow...this is how the Corporate office responds....Hertz will never get money from me or any family members!!!

UNSAFE VEHICLES Hertz used to be my favourite of the rentals companies - but they now issue unsafe cars. I hired a car in Crete in September and was told I was being given an upgrade. The 'upgrade' was the same category car I'd booked but with 'added character'. This included no parking brake (button had snapped off completely), stained seats, dented body panels and possibly 0 maintenance in it's hard-worked 60,000 km. All these things I could tolerate, if it hadn't been for the brakes, which were absolutely shot, juddering and vibrating unless feathered with a scary stopping distance. I complained mid-rental and was expected to take 3 hours out of my short holiday to drive to the airport and exchange it. Needless to say I didn't bother and just avoided using the car until returning it. I asked for a paltry €90 refund (equivalent to 1 day's rental out of the 4) and they have so far flat out refused to accept any responsibility for issuing me an unsafe, defective car (they tried to fob me off with $50 and have since ignored me) Don't bother, go to Europcar.
